Description: The Montana Voting Precincts have been updated as part of redistricting in 2023. Thirty-four (34 counties) of the fifty-six (56) counties were updated following the creation of the new Montana legislative districts. Voting Precinct boundaries have been aligned to MSDI administrative boundaries, PLSS, and parcels and projected to the Montana State Plane. Initially, the voting or election precincts were obtained from the local county offices by the Montana Department of Commerce through an FY2019 Montana Land Information Act (MLIA) Grant. The contractor used data (obtained from the counties) to digitize voting district boundaries following the recommendations of the U.S. Census Bureau Redistricting Data Program. Source data may be GIS digital data or manually digitized from maps. Key fields included 2-digit state FIPS, 3-digit county FIPS, Precinct Number, Precinct Name, County Name, and Data Date. The Voting Precincts along with the Montana Legislative Districts for 2014-2023 are available for download here: https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/AdministrativeBoundaries/Historic/According to MCA 13-3-101 the governing body of each county shall establish a convenient number of election precincts, equalizing the number of electors in each precinct as nearly as possible. According to MCA 13-3-102 the county governing body may change the boundaries of precincts, but not within 100 days before any primary or between a general election and the primary for that election. When changes are required to make precinct boundaries conform to legislative district boundaries following the adoption of a districting and apportionment plan under Article V, section 14, of the Montana constitution or other district boundaries changed by the districting and apportionment plan, the changing of precinct boundaries must be accomplished within 45 days of the filing of the final plan. The Montana State Library and the MSDI supports a federated database approach to all MSDI layers. Montana defines a federated approach as a method that supports the integration and utilization of data from multiple data providers, while retaining the primary maintenance responsibility with the provider. Most of Montana's framework data model efforts have adopted a federated approach that leverages multiple data providers and thus multiple data maintainers. The boundary files were created based on the best available source data received the Montana Department of Transportation's Fuel Tax Layer and County Government's GIS Programs. The Fuel Tax layer was adjusted to the most current version of the Montana GCDB and Cadastral Parcels. Digital data used as a base layer to adjust these boundary files were the best available source at the time: Cadastral (parcel lines), Geographic Coordination Data Base (GCDB), National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) Imagery. Description: Montana's landscape is a complex, constantly changing patchwork of federal, state, private and tribal ownership. Within these ownerships are many kinds of designations, including wilderness, parks, wildlife areas, recreation areas, and conservation easements. Because information on land stewardship is critical to effective land management, the Montana Natural Heritage Program began integrating ownership and management data into a land stewardship mapping data system in 1997. The goal of the Montana Land Stewardship Mapping Project is to manage a single, statewide digital data set that incorporates information from both public and private entities. The project assembles information on land ownership and management, conservation easements, state and federal agencies, and land trusts on a regular basis, with a major database update occurring regularly. The Montana Managed Areas layer contains information on special land designations that impact management decisions. Examples include Tribal Nations Reservations, National Wildlife Refuges, State Parks, and Wilderness Areas. Managed Area boundaries do no necessarily correspond to ownership boundaries; a Managed Area may be made up of fee lands, easements, leased lands, and/or other terms. The other Stewardship layers may be referred to for ownership and conservation easement information. Visit the Montana State Library to obtain Conservation Easement and Public Lands data. Map features in this dataset are not intended as a legal depiction of public or private surface land ownership boundaries and should not be used in place of a survey conducted by a licensed land surveyor. Description: County commissioner districts obtained from local county governments. Source data could be digital or manually digitized from maps. In compliance with MCA 7-4-2102 following the federal decennial census, the board of county commissioners shall divide their respective counties into as many commissioner districts as there are county commissioners and ensure that the districts are as compact and equal in population and area as possible. A change in the boundaries of any commissioner district may not be made between the date that falls 6 months before a county commissioner primary election and the date of the general election.

Description: The Montana Department of Revenue (DOR) maintains the database of Tax Increment Financing Districts. Attribute information including levy districts and dates comes directly from them. The MSL acts as the point of contact on these boundaries for editing, schema changes, maintenance, web services and distribution. These boundaries were created based on the best available source data received from the Montana DOR or from the local governments: Legal Descriptions, GIS Files, Source Maps, or where data sources were not available the Montana Cadastral GIS Data was used. Digital data used as a base layer to create these boundary files were the best available source at the time: Cadastral (parcel lines), Geographic Coordination Data Base (GCDB)/ CadNSDI, National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) Imagery, and 1:24,000 USGS Topographic Maps.
